Providing garden therapy for ISIS survivors in a quiet & therapeutic green space for 210 x women, children and youth.

My heart is full and overflowing with gratitude and thanks to all who donated to the Garden of Hope project in the Shariya refugee camp, near Duhok in Kurdistan, Northern Iraq.

$A6,000 has been raised to assist in the establishment of the garden:

  • The soil was turned last November,
  • Water tanks, greenhouses, raised beds and seating were installed
  • 40x bare rooted trees were planted,
  • Vegetable seeds planted,
  • The first harvest – cucumbers have been collected and being shared among the community
  • Over 210 children, women and youth rescuers and 200 internally displaced people will benefit from the Garden of Hope.

The therapeutic garden for ISIS survivors will continue to grow with the establishment of a farm shop, coffee/tea shop, garden education room and a courtyard with fountain. Habitats for bees and chickens runs will be built to supply honey and eggs, so that refugees can make soap and beeswax products for sale.

Thank you for assisting in the project to bring healing and hope to this beautiful group of people – survivors each one of them.

Thank you to Sohf Lisa, Owner and Founder at NGO Springs of Hope Foundation Inc for her inspiring projects for refugees and IDPs in the Shariya camp and village. Thank you for allowing us to assist in such a transformative project.

The Garden of Hope Project commenced November 2020: The area was levelled, fenced then soil brought in, water tanks installed, 2 x greenhouses erected, tiles for terracing delivered and laid, 40 bare rooted trees planted and seedlings laid in the green houses. The first students visited in February 2021 – a group of teenage girls who were all survivors of ISIS – to this therapeutic garden. They are keeping a diary record of the Garden activity and growth. Music students visited to practise – serenading the seedlings in the green houses. Then the first harvest – April 2021 – delicious cucumbers.
